Western Washington: direct sow from March. Harvest year-round — this is one of very few places in the country where continuous kale production is possible without any season gaps. Eastern Washington: spring from March, fall from July. Summer heat pauses eastern WA production.

Lacinato, Red Russian, Winterbor, and Redbor all produce year-round in western Washington. Purple and ornamental kale varieties overwinter beautifully. WSU Extension lists kale as the top recommended vegetable for western Washington.
Common Challenges in Washington
Slugs are the #1 kale pest in western Washington. Cabbage aphids. Cabbage worms. Clubroot in acidic maritime soils — add lime. Despite these pests, kale is so vigorous that it typically outgrows the damage.
