How It Works

We take your zip code, look up your USDA zone and frost dates, then calculate the optimal planting window for each of our 50 plants. The result is a month-by-month calendar showing you what to start indoors, what to transplant outside, what to direct sow, and what to harvest — all personalized to your area.

Using Your Calendar

The calendar is divided by action type. "Start Indoors" means sowing seeds in pots or trays inside your home, usually under grow lights or in a sunny window. "Transplant" means moving seedlings you started indoors (or purchased from a nursery) into the garden. "Direct Sow" means planting seeds directly in the ground where they'll grow.

Each plant appears in the months when that action is appropriate for your zone. Some plants appear multiple times — you might start tomato seeds indoors in February, transplant them in April, and harvest through August.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes — click the "Print Calendar" button after generating your calendar. It's formatted for clean printing with essential information and readable formatting. Many gardeners tape their printed calendar to the fridge or post it in the garden shed.

Some plants may not be suited to your zone or may have planting windows that fall outside the typical growing season for your area. For example, if your growing season is very short, long-season crops like watermelon may not appear because they can't mature in time.
